David Stacy

David Stacy is the owner and boxing/Greco-Roman Wrestling trainer at Octagon Gym.  He is an accredited personal trainer with a certificate from the American Sports and Fitness Association.  He will be completing the MMA fitness trainer exam in early 2010.  David Stacy will provide members with supplement/nutrition advice as well as developing safe programs that will help competitors make weight at competitions.

His formal training consists of training with the Grundy Wrestling Club (consistently ranked as one of the top wrestling programs in Virginia)under current Virginia Tech head wrestling coach Kevin Dresser.  His purpose was to be a training partner for Herschel Justus Jr., who became the VHSAA state champion in his weight class.

He also spent a good deal of my free time training at the now defunct Grundy Boxing Club (including teaching newcomers fundmentals).

In 1995 he attended Radford University (Va) where he attained a B.S. and M.S. in education while also training freinds and community members.  During his tenure at Radford he competed in the annual Highland Games, a scottish heritage festival featuring, among other events, the caber toss and the hammer throw.

While at Radford he developed an unnatural obsession with Sumo wrestling while seeing matches on ESPN.  He began researching the training and history of the sport and organized an inter-quad Sumo wrestling tournament in 1998.  He also took 5th place in the tourmanment with a record of 9 wins and 5 losses (competing against opponents that outweighed me by 90 lbs.).

Upon graduation he worked for a year as a bouncer at Club Cobalt in Roanoke, Virginia.  While there I continued to train in boxing under the direction of Rob Drisden, a former golden gloves competitor from Brooklyn, New York.  He also continued training Greco-Roman werstling with other bouncers who practiced the techniques to subdue unruly patrons.

In 2009 he began learning the 52 blocks boxing system after being introduced to the sport by Sifu Joseph Loyd.  He continues to study this artform and looks for ways to incorporate it into his boxing training program.
